Update: Product Withdrawal

Product Withdrawal Notice; Linwoods flax, Sunflower, Pumpkin, Sesame and Goji product

We were informed by the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) in November 2020 that there was a worldwide issue with the supply of Organic Sesame Seeds coming from India owing to large numbers of batches being contaminated with a pesticide called ethylene oxide.  We were notified at that time that we had received one batch of the contaminated product and were advised to implement a Product Withdrawal for certain lots of our Linwoods Flax, Sunflower, Pumpkin, Sesame and Goji product.  This withdrawal process was successfully implemented.

Owing to our concerns regarding this occurrence we decided to carry out further analysis on all Organic Sesame seeds received in the last 12 months and unfortunately we have found that one previous batch was also contaminated.  We reported our findings to the UK Food Standards Agency and their advice is to implement a Product Withdrawal procedure.

We have requested that all of our customers remove this product from sale and it should be noted that the UK FSA have deemed this to be of low risk to the consumer and therefore warrants a Product Withdrawal rather than a Recall.

The affected batches were produced during the months of August and September of 2020 and are made up of the lot codes listed below. The lot code of your pack is displayed on the back, at the bottom right hand side.

  • 21720
  • 23220
  • 23420
  • 23920
  • 24620
  • 25420
  • 26120
  • 26820

All other batches have been tested and Ethylene Oxide has not been detected in any other batches of flax, sunflower, pumpkin, sesame and goji.

At Linwoods we take great pride in producing high quality, safe food and since we opened our health food factory 15 years ago.  We have full BRC and Organic Soil association approval and are audited annually.

All raw materials used in our products are rigorously tested at goods intake stage when we carry out lab testing for over 480 pesticides.  Unfortunately ethylene oxide was not highlighted as a potential pesticide by the European Food Standards Agency until November 2020 and therefore it was not on Linwoods lab testing schedule.

We are extremely disappointed that our customers have been affected by this issue.  We have taken the decision to replace Organic sesame with Organic chia in this product and we are pleased that the new reformulated product is now available.

We would like to assure you that we take all matters of food safety and quality very seriously and we apologise for any inconvenience that this issue may cause.
