Lignans may be a brand new term for you but we are going to simplify what they are, the potential benefits for women who are in the menopause stage of life and their dietary sources.
What are Lignans?
Lignans are naturally occurring phytoestrogens found in flaxseed which mimic the role of oestrogen. Flaxseed is particularly abundant in the lignans, secoisolariciresinol diglycoside (SDG). Lignans are found in the inner layer of the flaxseed hull.
What are the benefits for women during menopause?
Decreasing and fluctuating oestrogen levels in menopause lead to symptoms such as hot flushes and insomnia. As lignans can mimic the oestrogen produced in the body, they may help reduce menopausal symptoms by balancing oestrogen levels.
Sources of Lignans
Soybeans and other legumes, seeds and some whole grain products are sources of lignans. Flaxseed is the richest dietary source of lignans. Linwoods MENOLIGNA has been developed specifically for women during the menopause and we have significantly increased the level of lignans in this blend to provide 300mg of SDG lignans per 30g serving.
