Skincare and your diet – help your skin by watching what you eat

The skin is one of the most complex organs of the body, containing hair follicles, oil glands, sweat glands, nerves and blood vessels. Simply put, after the heart and brain, it’s fair to say that the skin is the most important organ in your body and there’s a lot you can do a lot to help your skin by watching what you eat.

Taking care of your skin

Your skin works hard to keep you healthy, so in return you should show care to your skin, giving it the best treatment and protection you can. Washing your skin on a regular basis helps to prevent smells and bacteria, reducing the risk of infection. However, too much washing or over use of soaps can wash away the natural oils needed to keep the skin healthy and hydrated. Avoid using low quality skin products by first meeting a dermatologist to find out your skin type and decide which moisturisers and lotions are best suited to your skin.

Skincare and your diet

Our diets have a bigger impact on our skin than many tend to think. A poor diet can directly affect your skin. A healthy diet is as important as any skincare product you can use. Certain foods contain key ingredients that keep skin elegant and smooth. Here are just some foods to start thinking about including in your diet.

  • Green Tea

The polyphenols contained in Green Tea protect and improve the elasticity, density and other skin properties. A study published in the Journal of Nutrition in 2011 revealed that the antioxidants in green tea increase blood flow and subsequent supply of oxygen to the skin. This helps to deliver key nutrients to keep a healthy skin complexion.

  • Stock up on fruit and veg

Lots of fruit and vegetables are packed full of anti-aging vitamin C, helping to fight free radicals which damage cells and break down collagen leading to smoother, more hydrated skin. Things like blackcurrants, blueberries, broccoli, oranges, strawberries and sweet potatoes provide Vitamin C in your diet which helps to give radiant skin and enables blemishes to heal properly

  • Nuts and Seeds

Adding nuts and seeds to your daily diet can also contribute to healthy skin. Vitamin E which is necessary for healthy skin growth can be found in nuts such as almonds and seeds such as pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds. Our Milled Organic Flaxseed, Sunflower & Pumpkin seed blend provides 26% of Vitamin E per 30g serving.

Brazil nuts are a great source of selenium in the diet which is a powerful anti-oxidant and may help to protect against sun damage and age spots. One serving (30g) of our Milled Flaxseed, Nuts and Q10 blend provides 49% of your daily Recommended Intake of Selenium.

  • Water

As water is lost in large quantities every day it is needed to be constantly replaced. Drinking an adequate amount of water daily is important for your skin as well as overall good health because water aids important functions like digestion, circulation, absorption and even excretion. If your skin is not getting a sufficient amount of water the lack of hydration will present itself in the form of dry, flaky skin.
