Walnuts (Juglans regia) are a tree nut belonging to the walnut family. They originated in the Mediterranean region and Central Asia, and have been part of the human diet for thousands of years.
Walnuts are a rich source of Omega 3 (ALA) fatty acids which help to lower “unhealthy” LDL cholesterol levels. In addition they contain a range of antioxidants which help reduce the incidence of a number of diseases.
They are also thought to be a mood-lifter, containing the brain chemical serotonin.
